Today's call focused on the statistics of missing children. On a TV news program a few days ago, they made reference to the fact that there were only 100 kidnappings reported last year. This is true, but doesn't take into account the fact that there were over 1.5 MILLION children reported missing by the US Justice Department (USJD). The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) reports that there are over 2000 children reported missing EACH DAY! That's over 750 thousand per year. The difference in numbers is due to the fact that the USJD considers a child "missing" if a police report has been filed and the NCMEC considers a child "missing" once the case is entered into the NCIC database (National Crime Information Center). It is federal law that all missing children must be entered into this database and so police will sometimes not consider a child "missing" unless there is evidence and so presume it is not a missing child case, but may be a runaway.
